Belt Test Requirements
Every student who wishes to test for their next belt must qualify for Belt Testing before the date of the Belt Test.
A student qualifies for testing by completing the following requirements. (A more detailed description of these
requirements is available in the Stripes for Success document.)
- Black Stripes (Minimum of 6 required to belt test)
To earn Black Stripes, the student must continually perform their home chores throughout the months preceeding
the next belt test. For each week of chores successfully completed, the student will bring their completed
Black Stripe Form (in their Student Manual) to the dojang. Master Park or one of the Black Belt Instructors will
sign their form (only after the parent has signed it as well) and will give the student one Black Stripe.
NOTE: Only one Black Stripe may be earned per week.
- Red Stripe
To earn a Red Stripe, the student must maintain their grades in their schoolwork. They will have a Red Stripe
Form in their Student Manual, which is basically a progress report, to take to their teacher to fill out. The
completed form must be returned to the Dojang before the Belt Test application due date.
- Blue Stripe
To earn a Blue Stripe, the student must keep up on their reading. White belts are required to read 2 books
between belt tests, all other belts are required to read 5 books. The books they read can be books that are
required reading for school, or for longer chapter books, each chapter may be counted individually. The
students must complete a Blue Stripe Application (in their Student Manual) and return it to the Dojang before
the Belt Test application due date.
- Green Stripes (Two required to belt test)
To earn the required two Green Stripes, the student must demonstrate to the Master their proficiency of their Form
(one green tape), their One Step Sparring technique, and their Self Defense technique (second green tape for these
two techniques). This stripe is usually earned 2-3 weeks before the Belt Test application due date.
- Yellow Stripes (optional)
To earn Yellow Stripes, the student must perform at least 10 independent responsible acts per month for three
months. This could be putting their dishes in the dishwasher without being asked, walking the dog without being
reminded, helping their teacher without being asked, and so on. Record each of these individual responsible acts
on your Yellow Stripe form (in their Student Manual), at the end of the month if 10 items have been recorded, bring
the form (signed by a parent first) to the dojang where Master Park or a Black Belt Instructor will sign it and give
the student one Yellow Stripe. If the student has three (3) Yellow Stripes by the date of the Belt Test, they will
earn a medal at the Belt Ceremony.
Once these requirements have been met, the student is eligible to participate in the Belt Test. Note that all of
these requirements apply to our students age 4 - 18. Adult students only need to earn two (2) Green Stripes to be eligible
to participate in the Belt Test.
